If you are moving to the Houston area and are interested in fun activities that the whole family can enjoy, there are an abundance of things to do. There are many different fun centers, some that include arcades, go karts, bumper boats, and batting cages. Some of these even have snack bars or picnic areas for families to have lunch. However, these can be expensive, and many are geared towards older children. If you want something the whole family can enjoy, here are some alternatives.
One of them is the Children's Museum of Houston, and it only costs five dollars for each person. However, Thursdays from 5-8pm is family night, and admission is totally free. What better way to spend the evening than exploring all the different kid friendly exhibits, like the Building Zone. Kids don real hard hats and learn about all kinds of things through hands on interaction. Using pulleys, they can lift heavy objects or build archways using Earth's gravity, as well as many other things that will keep them entertained and wanting to come back for more.
Another great activity for the whole family is a trip to the Houston Zoo. While prices for admission vary by age, there are many locations throughout the Houston area that offer discounted tickets, and this is encouraged. It is open year round at 9 A.M., and from March through October is open until 7, six P.M. in the winter months. There are many days when admission is totally free, so it is a good idea to check with the zoo itself for these days.
For something completely different, why not visit the Houston Space Center. Open all year, the Space Center is always a hub of activities. You can ride the tram and view the Saturn rocket, see real mock ups of shuttle bays, and there are many other exhibits and attractions. Because of heightened security, you are no longer allowed into see all of the center's operations, especially mission control, but with some many other things to do, it really doesn't matter. There are shuttle simulators, you can check how much you would weigh if you were to visit other planets in our solar system and so much more. The center is open from 10am to 5pm during the week and from 10-6 on the weekends. Adult admissions are $18.95, and children 4-11 are only $14.95.
It isn't hard to find family fun activities in the Houston area, one look online can produce many different ideas. No matter what age group, or size of your family, you can always find something to stamp out boredom, if you only look hard enough. Most of them are easily located right in Houston, or even in other communities close by. You may also want to check out Dewberry Farm, which is open from the end of September to the middle of November and has been entertaining families for 8 years in a row. They have a variety of different activities, such as a corn maze, family fire pits, and even a pumpkin patch to pick your own Jack-O-Lanterns.
