One of the problems that many parents face is finding things to do with their kids. Sure there are many family places to go in the Houston area, but you can only go to the amusement park or family fun center so many times before this gets boring. Not only that, but many of these places have age limitations, and so smaller kids don't have the same fun that older kids do.
The other problem is that you can spend a lot of time just having the same old fun, but it is important that kids get educational experiences, especially during the holiday breaks, and during the summer when there is no school. Those parents that home school their children have to really search to find field trips where their kids can learn about things, without it actually feeling like they are learning.
Luckily, there are many things to do in the Houston area that accomplish this and more. Many also help home school teachers and families on a budget by providing free admission as well. Here are just some of the FREE places you can get into, that are not only fun places to visit, but can be quite an engaging and educational as well. Granted, some of these are not free all the time, but it will be noted when they are.

Both the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center, as well as the Mercer Arboretum and Botanical gardens are free to the public, and both are exciting ways to explore many botanical wonders. One of the places that many don't know about is the Museum of Health and Medical Science. Their body pavilion is a great way to tour the human body, and has giant representations of the human organs, including a 22 foot rib cage, and even a giant 10 foot brain. It has over 80 exhibits that are fully interactive. This museum offers free admission every Thursday evening from 4-7pm. Get there early, because you can expect that you are not alone.
Speaking of museums, here are three more that are free. The Children's Museum Of Houston, the highest attended by children in the country according the the Association of Youth Museums, has thirteen different fully interactive galleries, just waiting to be explored. It is free from 5-8pm on Thursday as well. The Menil Collection, a wonderful museum, is a privately owned collection of art by the the late Dominique and John de Menil. It houses over 15,000 sculptures, drawings, paintings, and so much more. This great hidden gem is free to the public, and open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11am-7pm, closed Monday and Tuesday.
Last but certainly not least is the Holocaust Museum of Houston, the first of it's kind in this area. If you want your kids to learn the importance of remembering one of the most tragic times in the World's history, this is the place to go. It is open M-F from 9AM-5PM, and from noon to 5 on Sunday.
These are just some of the great things for families to do together, that are totally free. Contact these places individually for more information, or you can also contact the Houston Chamber of Commerce to find out where each one is located.
