Houston is a great place to enjoy all sorts of different sports and recreational activities, whether watching sports, or playing them. There are the Houston Rockets, who have been NBA champions two times. Houston is home to their own hockey team, the Houston Aeros, and both of these teams play at the Toyota Center, near the Houston convention center. Minute Maid Park has been host to the Houston Astros baseball team, and their football team, the Houston Texans have played at Reliant Stadium since 2002.

Houston has also been host to many different special sporting events of the years, including two super bowl games, one in 2004, as well as 1974. It has been host for all star games for both baseball, and basketball, and even game 4 of the Baseball World Series against the Chicago White Sox in 2005. Reliant stadium will be the spot for both the 2011, and 2016 Final Four NCAA championships. With all these different sports clubs and games available in Houston, it is a good idea to purchase your tickets well in advance, or you may miss out on your favorite sports events.

Houston is also host to many college teams, not only for basketball, football and baseball, but also for softball and track and field. The Rice University Owls, Houston Baptist University Huskies, and the Texas Southern University Tigers are just a few of the collegiate teams that play Houston. During the summer months, more that 500 softball games can be found, and over 30 flag football teams can be watched until November.

The Parks and Recreation Department has many different sports programs available for children and young people of all ages. There is the Houston Youth Diamond Sports League, an affiliate program of the MLB, as well as many different softball and basketball opportunities. There are many different parks in the Houston and surrounding areas that are open to all kinds of sports activities and events, as well as numerous swimming pools, basketball and tennis courts.

If you are not into playing or watching regular sports venues, there are miles and miles of hiking and biking trails, and even a few Frisbee golf courses available. Because of it's relatively mild weather in the winter, it really doesn't matter what time of the year you want to enjoy some outdoor action, the only things that may deter your outdoor fun is the occasional rain shower, or even maybe a hurricane or two. If you are a golf fanatic, you have an abundance of choices, from private country clubs to municipal and public venues.

So no matter what kind of sports you play or watch, Houston is a hub of activities. You will have a hard time getting bored with sports opportunities, and the hardest part will actually be trying to fit them all into your busy schedule.
