Houston TX Professional Sports Teams

If you have relocated to the Houston area, and are a sports fan, you have come to the right place. Not only are there sports teams for just about any professional sport you can think of, but there are many college teams as well. You can watch sports just about any time of the year, and there are also many organizations open to new members, like softball, and soccer, for you or for your kids. With its temperate climate, and many different parks, Houston is the place where you can have great fun playing sports in the outdoors.

For professional sports, there are many to choose from. The Houston Texans are Houston's football team, and have been around since 2002. Gary Kubiak is the head coach, and has been since 2006. He has 16 NFL seasons under his belt, four with the Texans. In only three years, he has managed to become the best head coach in the team's history, with 22 career victories. Players on the roster come from all over the country, with 8 players making this their first season.

Since 1962, Houston has been home to the Astros, a major league baseball team, and perhaps one of the best. Brad Mills is the team's manager, and the head athletic trainer is Nathan Lucero. Head batting coach Sean Berry will have his fourth season as their batting coach. He returned to the Astros in 2003, and has 11 Major League seasons under his belt. His best season, with 95 RBIs and 17 home runs, took place in 1996. Three of this year's top draft results are Jiovanni Mier, Tanner Bushue, and Telvin Nash.

Houston is also home for two professional basketball teams, the Houston Comets, a women's team, and the Houston Rockets. On December second of last year, a difficult decision was made, suspending the operation of the Comets for the 2009 season. This was tragic, since they were a major part of the Women's National Basketball Association for 12 years, and had four major championships over the years. It is unknown when and if they will play again. However, the Houston Rockets are scheduled to play, and they are sure to put extra efforts into their game this year in honor of the Comets.

In 1981, the Apollos stopped playing, leaving a large gap in Houston's only International Hockey League franchise. Luckily, in 1994, the Aeros were formed to take their place, and have been a major hockey league participant since then. In October of that year, even after losing to Denver, they won their first game at The Summit, against Atlanta, 3-2. Since then these have strived to be one of the best teams in the IHL, and have done so with flying colors.

For college teams, the University of Houston has the Cougars, and the Rice Owls. You can find information about all of these teams, including rosters, coaches, as well as tickets to any of the games online. It isn't hard to find resources about all of the sports teams that call Houston home, and you can find out about what sports shows play on television.
