What is Hunting Like in the Woodlands, Texas?

While you can't actually hunt in The Woodlands of Texas, never fear, there are plenty of hunting and fishing opportunities around the area. In this hill country, you have many opportunities to hunt a variety of different game animals, including rabbits, squirrels, white tail deer and many other fur bearing animals. You can find special permits for bear, and Javelina, (wild hog.) If you are a property owner that has nuisance animals, you can kill these anytime, and there is no limit. However, for regular hunting on public and forest lands, you need a hunting or fishing permit, and can only hunt during the designated season. Bow hunting, with a license is also permitted, and these seasons usually run before or after regular gun hunting season.

The Sam Houston National Forest, located just fifty miles North of Houston, has many different opportunities for deer and small game, and since Lake Livingston borders it on the north, and Lake Conroe on the south, there are many sights to launch your boat and fish. One of the more noted fishing opportunities here is for black bass, and you can fish year round. There are many fishing opportunities at both of these lakes for large mouth bass, and bowfin. However it is important to note that elevated levels of mercury are affecting these two species of fish that are common in many of the lakes of Eastern Texas, most prominently at Ratcliff, Bouton, Boykin Springs, and Double lakes. For adults, you should limit eating these kinds of fish from these lakes to no more than two meals and no more than eight ounces every month, for children this amount is half. Luckily, this has effected only these two species.

All of the Sam Houston National Forest has been designated as a wildlife management area so there are some things that you need to know. One is that you have to pay an extra fee to hunt in these areas, but these extra fees are used to pay for enhancement programs in the forest, such as law enforcement, creating openings for other wildlife, and even wild turkey restoration. There are other rules and regulations that also apply, and you have to have a special permit to use this area. It is a good idea to contact the local Forestry Service for a complete list.

Some of the most common game that people hunt here are deer, which is probably the most popular, and of course rounding out second place is squirrel. Quail and dove are available to hunt, as well as duck hunting on the lakes. You should always plan ahead, and make sure that you wear bright orange clothing when gun hunting.

You can purchase your licenses and permits from many local sporting goods retailers, as well as online. It is a good idea to check with your local areas to find out about other rules and regulations as well. While there are many outdoor adventures for the hunter and angler, you also want to make sure that you are safe.
